Wife of ex-president Tejan Kabbah Tuesday declared for the position of National Women’s Leader of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) at the party’s secretariat in Freetown. Isatu Kabbah aka ‘IJ’ told journalists during a press conference that it was important for the party to elect people who are willing to work diligently for the party’s interest. She recounted her immense contribution to ensuring the SLPP regain its past glory.
“Some of us have contributed a lot to the party. Some people are talking about their qualifications. I am as well qualified to adequately handle the position of women’s leader in the party”, she said, adding that she had gone through lots of difficulties as a result of the party. IJ said while as a student she played a pivotal role for the SLPP and that she would ensure the party wins the 2012 general elections. Her challenger Hon. Bernadette Lahai said she was the most suitable person for that position, noting that during her tenure she has brought lots of impetus into the party.
Hon. Lahai said she was one of the outspoken members of parliament who has propagated the party’s ideals. She said if re-elected she would ensure that women’s issues will be prioritized in the party. “During my tenure as national women’s leader, I was able to organize a national women’s conference. During the award of party symbols, I ensured that women were given priority, which enabled the SLPP to have a good number of female parliamentarians”, she said.
Hon. Lahai argued that some of her detractors are of the opinion that it would be difficult for her to be effective in the position because of her parliamentary commitments. “My position will serve as an added advantage,” she said, adding that the SLPP is a democratic political outfit that gives equal opportunity to people to contest for any position.
