The Goods and Services Tax (GST) still dominates discussions in market centers. A tin of Sardine sold for Le. 2,500 is now Le. 3,000. Palm oil locally produced is now almost Le. 2,000 per pint, which wasn’t the case in December 2009. Several other goods have experienced similar increase in prices. Even though it’s Herculean to determine the average percentage increase, the rise in prices (rightly or wrongly) has been blamed on the introduction of the GST.

We eat rice produced mainly in China, India, Pakistan; ride on motorbikes Made in China; Freetown City Council cleaning the city with tricycles Made in China; buy drugs produced in India and China from pharmacies; hopefully, we would someday crowd our streets with used cars Made in China.

President Ernest Bai Koroma’s cabinet reshuffle has left the Central Bank of Sierra Leone without a Bank Governor for over two months. The president moved Dr. Samura Kamara, a highly respected financial expert and the Bank Governor, to become Minister of Finance and Economic Development without announcing any replacement during his cabinet reshuffle.
